[Guelph, ON – June 21, 2018]
Skyline Living, an award-winning property management company, is proud to announce that as of June 1, 2018, all their 169 residential properties across Ontario have gone smoke-free. This initiative is a continued effort on Skyline Living’s commitment to creating a healthier environment for their tenants and creating a greener future in the communities that they serve.

Prior to this new initiative, Skyline Living properties in BC, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were already smoke-free, as well as any new construction in Ontario that was completed after June 2014. By extending a smoke-free policy to existing buildings in Ontario, Skyline Living is aiming to continue their efforts to make a positive impact on the lives of tenants.

“Since our inception, Skyline Living has placed a focus on creating a safe and secure environment for our tenants to call home. Our smoke-free initiative is simply an extension of that,” commented BJ Santavy, Vice President of Skyline Living. “As people become more aware of the health impacts of smoking, and second-hand smoke, they start to look for ways to protect themselves from it, no more so than in their homes. By being one of the first property management companies to establish smoke-free buildings in Ontario, we are supporting our tenants in their desire for healthier living.”

Existing tenants are still allowed to smoke in their suites, but smoking is prohibited in all common areas and suites for new tenants. Skyline Living’s Resident Managers have established designated outdoor smoking areas for tenants that still wish to smoke but understand the need to protect their neighbours from the effects of second-hand smoke.

For existing tenants that want to quit smoking, Skyline Living has partnered with Public Health offices in communities across Ontario. Information sessions will be held to educate tenants on the benefits of going smoke-free, and to provide them access to the proven tools needed to aid them in their journey.

UPDATE – July 2020

As of September 1, 2019, we are proud to report that all Skyline Living properties in Ontario are now “smoke-free”. While there are still some outstanding leases that have been grandfathered in or tenants that reserve the right to smoke under AODA accommodations, Skyline Living is only offering smoke-free leases to new tenants. This program was undertaken as a collaborative effort where in the company worked with long-time residents to find meaningful solutions and support to preserve their continued tenancy. Understanding that all tenants may not be able to go completely smoke-free, we have designated smoking areas at all buildings and have implement heightened cleaning and maintenance protocols to ensure the comfort of all of our tenants.

Skyline Living has worked diligently to continue this program and ensure that our newly acquired properties throughout the rest of Canada are also only offering new smoke-free leases.
